How far can you upgrade RH8?

Really, this applies to any version of Linux, but I happen to have RH8 so I'm framing my question there. I recently discovered Yum hiding on my system, and over this weekend I've completely updated everything. My motivation for doing this is that I wanted to install one of these great HTML editors I've read about - Bluefish, Quanta, and maybe Screem. Try them, dump the one I didn't like. Problem is that all of them need me to upgrade the version of software present on my system. Bluefish and Screem appear to need the latest (or at least a later) version of Gnome, and Quanta needs the latest version of KDE. According to Yum and the RH8 repositories, I've maxed out my version.
So what does the more experienced Linux user do? Just go grab a more modern distro, like Fedora R2, or RH9 or whatever? Or do you actually point Yum at RH9 or Fedora repositories and upgrade in pieces? Actually, I think I have to get new versions of Yum to even handle the newer RPMs, but you get my thinking. Thanks! tcurt

I've never done it, but there are howtos out there about it on some yum sites. If I can find the one I read before I'll pass it on to you. Basically you point yum to the repository for rh9 and ugrade with that to rh9, then point it to fedora and update to that. From what I've read you do that and you can upgrade rh8 all the way to fedora core 2 if you want.

I'd find a howto before trying it, just to make sure there are no extra steps you need to do, so you don't fry your install.

Well, I've read some of them. Most say I need to get the version of Yum that applies to the system I want to update to and then run something called Release. If I really do this I'll go back for the details. I guess I was just trying to decide if this is really the practical thing to do. Or am I just looking at more grief? Does the experienced Linux user take periodic version leaps by going out and grabbing a new edition or do they constantly upgrade Linux in small pieces? For instance, should I bother figuring out how to install Gnome Desktop 2.6 on RH8 or just grab Fedora R2 which already has it? Thanks! tcurt
