how does one search w/ Nautilus?

how do I search for a file that might exist anywhere in my directory structure using Nautilus? When I click the search button within Nautilus it seems I'm searching for text in documents within that specific directory I happen to be in. Must be something I'm overlooking. Thanks.

I have my Nautilus file browser set to "Always open in browser windows" so then from the "tree view" on the left choose the directory you wish to search in and type in your search request in the location bar.

ok so let's say I have the tree view on the left and I select the folder I want to search (in that folder there are 10 other folders one of which contains the file I want to find). When I hit the search button, type the name of the file I want to find, and hit return, I get no results. Why is that? I guess I want to search a folder recursively.

I selected the Music directory with multiple folders and hit search then entered the name and the file was located in a short time. I chose the "File System" to search from and it took a considerable time longer.

Just can't get any results in search. I type the file name with and w/o extension and still nothing . I must be missing something. Sigh.

Edit:
Just tried this on another machine w/ ubuntu and it worked. I'm using Linux Mint (unbuntu based I think) - something must be wrong with it.

I thought I was the only one that noticed this. Sometimes it seemes like it just wont search. I can type the name of a file I know I have and hit search and it searches for a fraction of a second before claiming nothing was found. Other times I can search and get tons of results from various folders. Maybe a bug?

Linuxuser what distro are you using? - just out of curiosity. I was going to ask this question in a linux mint forum to see if others are having the same problem. Perhaps it is not distro. specific.
