how do you unzip something

I don't want to do an auto unzip, I want to do the console commands to unzip something and I was wondering if someone would tell me what they are?

unzip what?

.tar.gz ?
tar xfzs thisfile.tar.gz

.tar.bz or .tar.bz2
tar xfjs thisfile.tar.bz2

.zip
unzip -d thisfile.zip todir/

Of course, there are several more ways to do this so I suggest you read the man pages.
examples:
man tar
man gzip
man bzip2
man unzip

If the file has a zip extension, use unzip <filename>. It the file has extension gz or tgz, use gzip -d or gunzip <filename>. The file will probably be a tar archive, so you finish unpacking the file with the tar command, as in, tar -xf <filename>. Note: the filename must follow the -f option, which means tar -fx <filename> won't work.
