How do you share files on network using RH9 and Windows

Question: How do I share a directory on the network that gives users full access to that directory?

I have installed RH9 as the only OS on my pc at work and have successfully connected to the shared internet connection. My linux box can be seen on the network in a workgroup called mygroup named localhost. When others try to access the linux box it asks for a passord but not even a user on linux can access it from the network. Any help will be appreciated and surely be put to use.

welcome to the community!!!

=)

ARE YOU USING SAMBA FOR THIS???

there's LOT'S of info on samba on the web, but here's a link to the main docmentation page:

http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/

and here's a direct link to a decent (but probably kinda old) tutorial:

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I think that will be more than enough information. Will post back giving the status of my little project.

Thanx

Hello statyk,

Try turning off linux firewall. Sometimes firewall gets in the way with your Samba Server and clients.

If it works then you need to learn IPTables.

I've problem sharing my Samba share to the network and was able to remedy the problem by disabling firewall.

Anybody here knows how to allow Samba client request with the firewall enabled? I don't know IPTables.

After all the reading I was able to get it on the correct network and able to change the network name. It can now be seen on the same network as everyone else and by adding samba users (that already existed as a user on linux) they can access their home directory thru the network with no problems. Again thanx for the info Win32sux!

I tried sharing a folder under the local net sharing tab and get the error running filesharelist make sure is installed and in $path. Do you have a quick tip or other useful info?

Thankx

I created a share in the smb.conf file that is working perfectly. All things are running smoothly now or at least until the next challenge.
