If you wanted to open the firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2 file, then you should run

Code:
tar -xvf firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2
However, if you're building FF from source, then that's generally quite tricky - is it source or a binary?

What is Meego's package management recommendation? Do they have a "how to install software on Meego" FAQ or similar?

Firefox is distributed as a binary executable (similar to .exe in Windows) called firefox-bin or simply firefox inside a .tar.bz (similar to .zip).

Assuming Meego has some kind of GUI file manager and archive manager, it is simply double-click (to extract to ~/ home folder or Desktop), double-click (to launch Firefox).

However I recommend using the distro's package manager whenever possible. If the FAQ I just read is correct:

Code:
sudo zypper search firefox
sudo zypper install firefox.586
.586 should be replaced with your actual architecture, which you can determine with:

Code:
uname -p
although I must be honest I have never personally used Meego

How did you install firefox in the end? Source, or a binary, or by fixing zypper? (I would look into getting zypper's repositories sorted anyway, as you ideally want a package manager. http://wiki.meego.com/Zypper should help).
