Thanks for the link. I notice there are several versions for DOS boot files. Do you know which I should download? I have Windows XP Pro if that helps... Thanks!

I'm not certain a DOS boot disk is going to help you as it won't work on an NTFS formatted system. However, if you boot from the XP CD and go to the recovery console then the same command should fix your MBR ie. fdisk /mbr

I'm not certain of that though as I've never had cause to try it myself.

The windows 98/ME/NT/2k/XP disk should work fine in conjunction with fdisk /mbr , you don't have to actually read the NTFS partition

I realise that, but when I tried a Win98 boot disk on my XP machine it just tells me, in no uncertain terms, to take the disk out. From what I've read, this is due to the NTFS file system. Of course, it could just be my system that doesn't like it...

Works for me, but there you go the madness of it all :)

Be easier to do what you said though with CDROM, haven't tried it myself eitherthough , no downloading and looking for floppy disks under beds and behind cupboards.
