how do you format a linux hdd?


i currently have redhat 7.2 installed on a spare pc, but i want to format it, to reinstall... but i dont know how? All the tutuorials on the net seem to assume you have windows installed when you want to format.

im presuming i have to make a boot disk? then what?

please help.

why do you need to format it? redhat will automatically do it when you install.

If you want to just get rid of everything . . .

mkfs /dev/hda

or hdb, or whatever your harddrive currently is. It will write a linux OS format to the entire drive, erasing all data.

there is no formating but just making filesystems in linux. is it right?

That's all that formatting is for any OS, laying out the filesystem. And as Master Kewpie so eloquently stated, the RH installer will do that for you, if you want it to. Life is good with smart installers !!
