How do I write special characters in UTF-8?

I want to be able to enter special characters into OOWriter and gedit. Ubuntu supports UTF-8, and I've no idea how to use it.

In most editors it will work to press Ctrl+Shift+u, this will display an underlined u. After that type in the code for that character. For example, if I do this with the code 2021 it will look like u2021. After pressing Enter it will become .
