how do I work out where my disk space is going?

Hi,

I've got a linux dev box with 97% of /var used. What commands do I use or methods do I employ to most effectively work out what massive files are chewing up my disk space?? I've not got a GUI - just command line.

Thanks in anticpation.

I like to work my way down the filesystem tree using 'du -sh /var/*' or similar.

in addition to du -h /var/*, if you append --max-depth=1, then you can identify those directories in var which are the largest, and then work within those.

Thanks guys - much appreciated. This quickly helped me to identify that samba was writing massive logs (log level = 3 in smb.conf), deleted the log files, set log level to 1, all is good.
