How do I view KDE 4 start menu in Dolphin?

I want to be able to view KDE's Start Menu. Something went wrong with my distribution and I'm unable to open the start menu but am wondering if there's a way I can view the start menu from Dolphin. If possible I want to make note of what programs to install since I plan on doing a fresh install of a new distro.

Not sure which distro you're using, but it might be easier to fix the menu button, than to figure out what is on it.

However, that said, I see on my Slack-current system, a file at /home/sasha/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu which appears to be more or less the menu structure of the start-menu.

What happened to your start menu? Any idea?

I'm using Mandriva. I'm not sure what happened. When I click on the star icon that Mandriva uses for the Start Menu nothing happens. I have no clue what happened and have been unable to fix it. It was a fairly fresh install so since I have so little to lose I plan to try a different distro, likely OpenSUSE.

Try this:

In a console as root, type:

kdeinit
then
kdeinit4

and then as your regular user, do the same.

After that, try the menu button.

If it still fails, reload the messagebus (I don't know how you do that on Mandriva)

Thanks. That helped. The kdeinit didn't work but I did a search on how to reload messagebus. I don't know if I did it wrong but now when I boot Mandriva it gets to a screen that says "ELILO Boot:"
I tried typing KDE at that menu and it instantly boots Mandriva. Yet if I don't type KDE in around 10 seconds it starts booting Mandriva. I'm definitely a step ahead because now when I get into KDE the start menu is working fine so I'm a step ahead and was able to make a list of all my start menu items. I really like Mandriva and if I get it working correctly I may stay with it instead of going to OpenSUSE.
Do you have any idea of how I can solve this ELILO boot issue so that it goes directly into Mandriva? If necessary I can post about this on the mandriva forum.

I don't know about the ELILO situation, but Google can help you there -- I've not experimented with that at all.

However, the running KDE, kdeinit, or messagebus, should all have nothing to do with ELILO or LILO as far as I know; they're totally unrelated

As for the start menu, or, if you ever find that suddenly KDE stuff stops working, or like Konqueror won't open any files or whatever, try the stuff I gave in post#4 -- there's a load of bugs in KDE 3.x.x - 4.x.x and a lot of it has to do with kdeinit dying, and/or kdesu not working.

I'm curious what you learn about this ELILO thing so if you find out what's up, do post back about it! PS - maybe ELILO's been broken from the get-go, and now it works like it should!?

Thanks. Will do that and since this is a new install maybe it was wrong from the beginning. I'm a Linux Newbie so this is all new to me but I'm sure enjoying it compared to my Windows days

For sure! A whole lot of variety & gadgetry to play with vs Windowz
