How do i use cable internet on Red Hat 9?
 

I know i should be asking this to my ISP, but they flatly refuse to talk anything about Linux.
I installed Red Hat 9 a couple of days back...but i cant get my internet connection working in it.I have a shared cable modem.Under win98,i have been given a software in which i put in my username and password and click on Login..and i'm connected.
Now under linux, since the ISP dont have software which allows me to login, i'm stuck.I know they themselves perhaps know nothing about linux, but there has to be some way i can get online :( for info, my ip changes everytime i login, and i think i have that DHCP thingie...cos i keep seeing "Unable to resolve DHCP server".....error messages in win98 everytime there's a problem with the ISP.
Anybody got a clue, i really miss the internet while i'm in linux...:(

did the connection work with linux before?

what error message is produced by linux when the connection fails?

what is the username and password on windows for? is it for a proxy server or something?

win32sux.....no i dont get any errors as such because as i said,the ISP havent put up any linux-compliant software used to login to their service.I havent been able to go online in Linux ever since i installed mandrake and then red hat 9. The username and password are what i type into the software dialog box which sits beside the system clock...basically its just to login to their network.Without logging in, i cannot be online in Windows.
Jayakrishnan.....i called up the ISP's main office after i started this thread...n i was told "Sorry sir, we do not support nor recommend linux"
There was no point taking the conversation any further.....its clear they themselves don't know anything to be able to help me out!

i did a google search on ppp.....seems like its for dial-up users.i have a cable internet connection.....or ethernet connection to be precise.

One thing i can think of is that it may use java based program for logging in, i know mandrake out of the box has to have java installed and configured properly, i think redhat is the same. i know this because i like to do internet banking, The loging screen would not appear for me so i could not login. Is the login screen supposed to appear when the web browser is opened?

i about to ask who your isp is... then i realized you are in india and it would not do me one bit of good!

it sounds like ppp to me. more specificly pppoe (point to point protocol over ethernet)

You might find a linux client for your isp on http://www.sourceforge.net

There is one for Hotwire, but Hotwire provides broadband without the cable modem. They do it through a lan card.

fotoguy, no there is no login screen that i have to fill on opening a web browser.....the software that these guys provide(my ISP) just isnt linux compliant....so i was lookin for a way to find a work-around n be able to access the net while in linux!
Hotwire, i believe is an ISP in new delhi, not in mumbai...but i'll take a look at sourceforge.net....

You need not do nothing. Simply plug in the Cable modem to your network connection. I used to use AT&T Cable DSL with Motorola cable modem. I did not have to do anything, it automatically works. I use Redhat 8.0
