How do I use a fax-modem to send and receive a fax through a Linux distro?
Hello,
Back in the old days, there used to be a thing called a "fax-modem" that I used to use on some of my pc's. Back then, I never used the fax feature and always just used the regular dial-up modem part to connect with Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's) or dial-up internet service providers at dial-up speeds. I haven't heard of these being used anymore so I'm not sure if they are still being made or even used now days (probably not or almost never). But, assuming I had one, how would I use it to send and receive a fax using a Linux distro of some kind? Thank you |
Google is your friend.

do you also have a second "twisted COPPER " telephone line ?
i am betting there is a "mailbox's plus" or us mail or UPS office or a office depot or a western union or and so on near you |

From what I have read, I don't think this is possible. If you want to be able to do this, then you can try purchasing a dial-up modem (external hardware ones would probably be best, like this one,) and then install a program like efax-gtk. Or, if you want to stay with broadband, try the suggestion here. ;) Regards... |
You need a fax service. You generally have to pay to have that service. There were companies around a lot but who faxes anymore? They'd rather risk your data on email.

As stated you need a a web FAX service like efax.com. FYI hylafax is one linux application that uses a traditional FAX/MODEM to send/receive FAXs over a regular phone line. |
Probably overkill: http://www.hylafax.org/content/Main_Page
