How do I uninstall Linux?
 

I installed Red Hat Linux 8 on a Dell laptop, and wiped out the original Windows 98 by mistake. I still have a Windows 98 disk. Is it possible to uninstall Linux and put back Windows?

Boot from the windows 98 disk and run fdisk and delete the partitions you have, then run "fdisk /mbr" to delete the master boot record. Then you can reboot, make a new partition for windows, format c: and reinstall windows. If you want to dual boot, then instead of making one large partition for windows, set up partitions for linux as well (put windows on the first partition and install it first, then linux).

I insert the Windows disk and start the computer, but it starts in Linux anyway. If I open the disk and click on setup.exe, I get a message that "Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying '/mnt/cdrom/setup.exe' Help!

You need to set the BIOS to boot from the CD-Rom, or use a win98 rescue floppy disk to boot with.

How do I set the BIOS to boot from the CD Rom? (My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive):confused:

You hit either F1,F10 or F12, depending on your BIOS, when the computer first starts up. Its best to just start pressing it repeatadle right after you power on the computer. If one key doesn't work try another. Some older BIOS's (actually some new ones to but not very many) require you to press Delete. Sometimes when it firsts boot a message will appear telling you to hit a certain key to enter Setup. If you see that then hit the key that it tells you to.

After you are in the BIOS look around for the option to change the order of boot.

Did you boot off the CD when you installed linux?

Sometimes boot loaders can be a little over agressive.... depending on the bios ive seen cases where i have had to take the hdd completley out of the boot sequence to get it to work.
