How do i transfer file using ftp protocol in Linux.

Hi ,

I want to transfer file using ftp protocol .

I m using following linux distribution.

PHP Code:
LSB Version:    :core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.1-ia32:graphics-3.1-noarch
Distributor ID
OracleVMserver
Description
:    Oracle VM server release 2.2.0
Release
:        2.2.0
Codename
:       n/

When i run

PHP Code:
[root@OFSMUW-VS-51 ~]# service ftp status
output is
ftp
unrecognized service
How would i install FTP ? Do i need to install ftp server or client?

Where would i get suitable ftp server/client for my distribution.

Some rpm related to ftp are already in my machine please find the details
PHP Code:
# rpm -qa | grep ftp
ftp-0.17-35.el5
lftp
-3.5.1-2.fc6
tftp
-0.42-3.1.0.1

Do you want to get or put files from/to other machines, or are you
expecting to get and serve up?

You are not specifying your problem clearly.

Do you want to "do FTP" i. e. connect to an FTP server with an FTP client so you can upload files to and download files from a remote FTP server from your local Linux machine?

OR

Do you want to run your own FTP server, so that other users can connect to your Linux machine to download and upload files?

It depends on what you want to do - either serve files over FTP, or download / upload them from a remote server.

If you just want to "use FTP" get an FTP client like gFTP or KBear. If you want to run an FTP server, you'll need to get one like proFTPD.

Not sure what packaging system your Linux supports, if any. If required you can download the source code for an FTP server and compile it yourself, it is really not that hard.

Please post again if you require more assistance.

The service name is vsftpd not ftp, run service vsftpd status instead.

But you still haven't mentioned what you're actually trying to achieve.
