Ok I am ready, I have attempted to download the knoppix liveDVD and burn it to disk. However after burning it, when I boot, windows XP loads. My computer is set to boot from CDRom first. I can hear the CD spinning but no Linux

You need to burn it as a bootable disc.

If the tool you used to burn it with doesn't do bootable discs, here's one that does:

(disclaimer: I've no idea how good that might be, I just googled it)

On most software that means "burn image", and point it at the .iso

Open the DVD and see what's there....
Many files and folders---good
one file ending in .iso---bad (means that you did not burn from image.)
