How do I share files between 2 Ubuntu 8.10 boxes in the same room?

OK, I think I must be simple.

I have been searching for a couple hours and can't find a thing that seems to apply to what I want to do. I don't think this should be too tough. All I want to do is share files between 2 computers in the same room.

Everything I can find assumes that some MS box is involved. All I have is 2 boxes, both running Ubuntu 8.10.

We bought a house in town because the boss on the ranch up and died on me and the Dreaded mother in law lives in town and we feel better if we can keep an eye on her.

Got this second box. Installed 8.10. Has little storage capacity. Has DSL instead of dial up that I have at the ranch. I will be moving that box next week. I want to suck some of the files off this box.

This box is IDE and the other is SATA so I can't just swap the drives around real easily. I can do that if I have to, I have an IDE external enclosure.

There has to be an easier way.

I will be getting a router so that we can share the modem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Tom

It should be not that tough to share the files between linux boxes. All you need is to configure NFS to share the files on the network between boxes.
This documentation from Ubuntu help site should be enough to set it up.

WELL, that does look like it will help. SI don't know how I missed that one. I thought I had gone through everything relevent on the Ubuntu site.

I have never had more than 1 box. Only worked in town a couple times in the last 3 decades, only once where I spent much time on a computer (90s runing MSDOS with dosshell off floppies). Have never hooked them together.

Another opportunity for fun AND education. Hard to beat.

Thanks, I need all the help I can get.
Tom
