How do I set up my DSL connection within SuSE 9.1?
 

Hey people,

I recently downloaded SuSE 9.1 and I think it's great. However, as I'm a newbie, I have no idea how to set up an Internet connection within it.

I am currently using DSL, connection speed is 512kb/s. My modem is a D-Link DSL-302G, which is connected via USB. I only have one PC, therefore I have no networks at all.

Could anyone please help?

Can you use a ethernet card and do you have a static address ?

run the 'yast2' program from the start button (under system settings). There is a configuration button in yast2 to set up your DSL access. I'd try that first. Then if it's a 'no-go', maybe we can think of something else. :(

yeah i can use ethernet (i have a port in the back of the modem and one in my pc). i use dhcp not static. i tried yast2 and it did not work. i dont think i set it up properly. can someone gimme a step-by-step on how to do this properly?

you are using a usb modem, and those generally are not supported "from the box" by linux, this due to the fact that drivers just dont exist for linux (as the modem providers are not interested in linux support, most people use windows or macs at home).

i use my DSL connection with an Voyager USB modem and it works fine, you need to get the program ECIADSL (http://eciadsl.flashtux.org) - this program sets up and configures your modem for use with linux, ive used it on suse linux with no problem

a quick check on their modem compatiblity list shows that the "D-Link DSL200" usb modem is supported, but does not mention your particular model ("DSL-302G"). but you can give it a go, or look at their forum for any info.

as far as step-by-step instructions go, they provide you with a nice guide to setting up your modem. note that will need some information regarding VPI's and other stuff, so you may have to ask your ISP nicely for some info.

What I did after going around and around for awhile is forget modem and forget dsl in yast just configured my eternet card for dhcp and that was it.I was trying to configure my modem and dsl but it was not needed.

ok, fill me in a bit there pls. what do you mean? did you just configure your network card and what; you were on the net then? im so confused here.

It has been about 3 months ago but as I remember I went to yast and then to network card then I configured my cards driver,it saw it,configured it for dhcp and rebooted.When I got to the right place it gave me the option of dhcp when I was in the wrong place it was asking for static add.I think I could have entered a dummy address,I think you can do it that way,like I said it has been awhile and all the other dist. I have used I didn't have to go through all that.I wish I was using suse so I could be more helpful,I do remember not to configure my modem and not to go into dsl just get into network card,pick your card select dhcp and let yast do its thing.good luck,I have the suse 9 book here with some other info but there is alot at suse support.

I GOT IT WORKING!!!

Thank you everyone for helping me to get this working. All it took was to me to unplug the USB and plug it into Ethernet instead.
