How do I remove Ubuntu without a partition of windows?
 

I'm not the most tech-savvy but I know a decent amount. Here's my problem: My friend told me he had an amazing operation system (Ubuntu) that was just like windows. (I know most people don't like it but it works just fine for gamers). So, i let him install it.

Now the problem is, he has no idea how to remove it. My games don't work on it and I cannot even connect to my wireless Internet. How do I remove it, it seems as though there is no partition of my windows. Is it possible to remove it or am I stuck with Ubuntu?

I do have an XP install disc that just crashes when I try to use it.

Being an operating system, there's no sort of "uninstall". To remove it, you simply delete/erase the partition on which it resides or install a new OS over the top of it.

If your friend installed a new OS for you on top of your old Windows, then there's no way of getting windows back without reinstalling it from a CD that works on your system. If your friend installed it next to windows (i.e. in it's own partition), then you should have a boot loader pop up when your computer first boots. In that boot loader, there should be an entry for Windows. If that's the case, you can simply select windows & you should be back in windows. If that works, let us know & we can show you how to get Ubuntu removed from the boot loader and/or remove the boot loader all together.

Ubuntu is an entire Linux distribution. Your wireless should work fine with it, if you configure it. Chances are he formatted your hard drive, if you don't have a "Windows" boot option on your boot menu. To get Windows back, you'll have to recover from your CD's/DVD's that came with your computer. You're stuck with your computers tech-support for help with reloading Windows.

The operating system is great, but you can't run Windows programs on Linux, anymore than you can run Mac programs on Windows...it's a different OS. There is a product from Cedega called "point-and-play", which will let alot of games run under Linux.

Did your friend create a new partition on your Hard disk for Ubuntu, or did he let Ubuntu install itself using your whole HD??

So, if you look in Ubuntu in the 'places-computer' menu, do you see any other media than just 'filesystem' (which is your Ubuntu stuff)? Or, when you start up, do you get a menu that lets you choose between different operating systems? Windows indeed cannot see a Linux partition, so it sounds like windows is gone... You can by the way perfectly create a dual boot system, that runs XP and Ubuntu next to each other! (which to run can be done at bootup). Easiest by the way to learn more about Linux in general is to run it from a live-CD without installing it.

I am writing this using Ubuntu too, and I must say I loooooove it! Thru, some Windows applications do not work, although... there are so many ways to get things to work, I myself have just begun to explore. Personally I want to be the one in control of my computer, and not Microsoft.

Hi I have got ubuntu working on top of windows but I would like to remove it and I haven't got the ISO disc for win7pro.
But I have read your last answer to another person that you can remove it on the boot system which occurs every time I turn on my laptop so could you please tell me how to remove it without using any disc.

What exactly does that mean? Did you do a wubi install of Ubuntu where Ubuntu is installed inside windows? If you did that, you should be able to go into Program Files and delete/remove it like you do any other program.

If you installed Ubuntu on a separate partition and use the Ubuntu bootloader to boot both windows and Ubuntu, that's a separate problem? So which is it?

Can you boot into ubuntu and open up a terminal in accessories and type in

If grub is installed as your boot loader you will need a windows 7 cd to recover your MBR (Master Boot Record) otherwise when you delete the ubuntu partition your system will become unbootable till you get a windows 7 cd. There is a chance their are 3rd party tools to do this for you but how much you trust them thats up to you. Consult Windows your Computers Tech Support for that.

Hello. New here..
I'm trying to uninstall my Ubuntu. I tried doing a couple things, and I think I might have messed something up. I really don't want to resort to reformatting my computer, if at all possible. I have a 64-bit Windows 7 machine. The Ubuntu version I have is 11.10, I believe.

When I first tried uninstalling it on my own, I found all these websites saying I need to download EasyBCD, "Write MBR", etc. So I tried that, but then realized I don't have a separate partition for Ubuntu. And then somewhere along the way, I think I tried to remove the program from Add/Remove Programs, which I thought would have worked according to this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#Uninstallation, but apparently not.

Here's what I can see:

• Looks like I didn't create a separate partition when first installing Ubuntu. When I run diskmgmt.msc, it doesn't show a blank partition of my hard drive.
• When I go to Add/Remove Programs, I do not see Ubuntu.
• Whenever I boot my system, it asks if I want to boot using Windows or Linux. When I click Windows, everything works fine. When I click Ubuntu, it says I'm missing something and I can't log in anymore. I imagine this happened when I tried to uninstall Ubuntu some other way.
• From what I can tell, the Ubuntu was installed at "C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Virtual Machines\Ubuntu". I can see files such as: Ubuntu.nvram, Ubuntu.vmdk, Ubuntu.vmsd, Ubuntu.vmx, Ubuntu.vmxf, vmware.log, vprintproxy.log. I also have a folder called "caches"

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Can you add a link to the site from which you downloaded Ubuntu? That might help folks figure out what you have.

I have Wubi on Win7 and the path is C:\ubuntu; I just checked and there is no reference to it in \users\documents.
