How do I read emails generated by the system?

I have Debian 3.1 installed. It is a minimal installation. When I login, I see messages on the console that goes like 'You have new mail at /var/mail/akhran'. Besides using vi to read the file (whch doesn't show the emails in proper formats), is there another way to read the emails ?

Thanks !

you could use a client like mutt. type mutt at the command line to invoke it and load the messages.
