How do I quit the QEMU emulator running an ARM system?

I can't use shutdown -h now because I don't have permission (or root)

the university script I have tells me to use ctrl-alt-delete but that doesn't shut it down like it says it should, instead it restarts it... so whats the safe way of doing this?
