How do I patch the kernel?

I have the patch file. And I'm pretty sure i know what command to use, but i don't really know what directory I'm supposed to perform this in.

I'm currently using Mandrake 9.2

[Also, how do I check which version of the kernel I have?]

Dopeskills,

You can find out what kernel you are running by looking at the Makefile in /usr/src/linux.
The complete version number will be present at the top of the file under VERSION, PATCHLEVEL and SUBLEVEL.

If your patch is in a tar file, unzip the file and read the README file. It should tell you where to place and how to perform the patch.

for future reference, you can also type "uname -r" for the kernel (i.e., release version).
