How do I log-out from KDE or Gnome using the Terminal

I'd like to know how to log-out from Gnome or KDE using terminal commands.
I know about halt which turns the pc off but only root user can use, there must be one for an ordinary user?

for KDE you can use "kdeinit_shutdown" command... for gnome, something similar must exist.
