How Do I Install Software on Open Suse 10.2

Hello All,

I am having trouble installing these programs on a web hosting server. Open Susue 10.2

DNS Server: BIND9
FTP Server: proftpd
Courier-POP3/Courier-IMAP
Webalizer

I have downloaded them all from the web. The file format is tar.gz I have un-zipped them all to the desktop in seperate folders and the file extensions are now like this:
proftpd-1.3.0a
bind-9.3.2-P2
webalizer-2.01-10
I open the yast GUI, search for the file...nothing, drag and drop the file into yast....wont work either. I have looked in this forum and other forums, also went to opensuse website and found out that the file should be .rpm extension and to do this, I should use a package manager.....??? So, now I have been trying to "convert the files to .rpm using yum & smart.....Nothing seems to work. I have been working on this for 3 days now..what a pain in the butt. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong and how to install these 4 programs....Please !!!

Thanks in advance,

Coop

i think all of those programs are part of the opensuse distro.

so open yast, add some 10.2 repository (see opensuse.org for mirrors....) with "installation source" and start the software-management part of yast.

then just search for the apps and have'em installed.

It appears that you are trying to use Linux as though it was Windows. That is a recipe for frustration. Linux is more like UNIX. For a brief tutorial, look here. You may need additional information, but at least you will be using an appropriate methodology. Good luck in any case.

Hi rtspitz & Cogar,

Thanks for your replies. I am reviewing the info you gave me and I will try your suggestions. Let you know what I come up with. Hopfully I'll get it going soon.
