Question How do I install software on Linspire without CNR?

I have a computer with Linspire installed, and am very new to Linspire (formerly Lindows) or any Linux distribution. Linspire has a subscription service (CNR) that allows you to install software automatically, but there has to be a (free) alternative. How do I download and install software myself? I don't even know what file extension to look for when downloading. Any help or tutorials would be appreciated; thanks.

Well, after running a quick search, I have found that the answer seems to be yes, but most likley not this easily. I point you to the bottom of this page under costs:

http://www2.harriman.tec.tn.us/ift/a...inspire4_5.htm

As you can see, the author implies that you can use kpackage to install free software off of the internet. I don't know how well this works though. You can also usually learn to install just about anything linux related from source, but thats kind of tricky sometimes.

Personally, I would tell this distro to shove it for that price, but if you can get it working for you, then go for it.
Hope everything works out.

I am sure its possible because Linspire is based on Debian. Do a google search for "linspire+apt" and you should get some results that can help you out.

Okay, I have a basic understanding of what APT is. Now, how do I get it and use it?

KlickIt!

I am the author of the article that was mentioned above. I wanted to mention that there is another software program out there called KlickIt! When I wrote that review I didn't know about it. I haven't used KlickIt! in a few months, hopefully they have updated their software. They have updated their site, hopefully that is a good sign they updated their software. When I was using it they had outdated software and some of the apps would never install for me. But it is another option to CNR...when you can get it to work!

Question How to install KlikIt!

I am trying to install KlikIt! following the instructions on www.klikit.org. My computer is running Linspire 4.5. I was unable to get anything to appear after pressing ALT+F2, so instead I went to L menu/Run Command to get the prompt to appear. After pasting in the string and clicking Run, I do not get to the next step shown. Instead, two windows appear and nothing happens after that. One of the windows is titled 'konqueror' and shows the following messages:

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
MNG error 1029: Chunk out of sequence; Chunk TERM; subcode 0:0
MNG error 1029: Chunk out of sequence; Chunk TERM; subcode 0:0

The other window looks like an Explorer window and is titled 'file:/tmp' showing the following folders: kde-root, ksocket-root, mc-root, mcop-root, and orbit-root.

Please advise, I have no idea what I am doing or what is happening. Thanks.

Old Version Of KlickIt!

I don't know whether this will work for you or not, but it sounds maybe like the version of KlickIt! they are offering now only works with Linspire 5.0, At the moment I don't have a system with Linspire installed on it, but to get KlickIt! installed onto the one I had it on I used the following:

Install by using the follwing command from a console window.

wget -c http://www.loscompanion.com/klikit/p...pare-system.sh -O -|sh

I hope this will work for you, good luck

I opened a console and entered:

wget -c http://www.loscompanion.com/klikit/programs/prepare-system.sh -O -|sh

and I get a 404 File Not Found error. I am entering the arguments as [dash][capital letter o] [dash][vertical bar]sh.

Won't work in 4.5

I was doing some Googling and found this in their forums...

http://loscompanion.com/forum/viewto...t=linspire+4+5

According to that it won't even work on 4.5, I guess they have released a newer version of it because I did have it installed on my system at one time...
