How do i install slackware 8 disto?

I just downloaded it and i wanted to give it a try. I like red hat but i want to try another disto. I was told this is a good one for newbies to really learn linux. So how do i install it because its not all nice a gui like the red hat one. LOL!

It all depends on how far you are and what you want to do. After you create the partitions it's all fairly automatic. To make things easiest, when you boot the cd or install image and after you type root, use cfdisk to create at least a root (/) and /swap partition. If you have any questions about partitioning, now's the time.

ok can i make it load on bootdisk like i do redhat? and its a 8gb hd how should i slice up the hd? O and one more thing its HDB. so should i unplug the other hd to be safe?

when i am installing slack, before you type setup, type cfdisk to start the partition setup program. there is where you can setup all your partitions with sizes you want for your install.

Slack

i have run quite a few operating systems in my life but slack rulez over them all. the setup i have used is just fdisk then m for help n read all the help there i have to delete the partitions then i just make one big partition if you have a fast enough computer with enough ram u will not need to make partitions mines a p100 with 24meg of ram btw. i ment by that u need to make only one big partition like i do lol sorry i talk confusingly  then from there on i quit saving changes to disc then typing setup to lead you through the rest its quite easy from there also :) u chose a good installation os because others i have been with eg Open Bsd are hell to install.
Enjoy

digital bots 04-07-2002 09:18 PM

drat..... it gave me a mount error saying that source device can not be asscessed properly. Whatst he deal with that?

taz.devil 04-07-2002 10:37 PM

Yes, 7 Gigs is quite enough, and MPlayer works very nicely on Slack. As far as source device error, how are you installing the software? From CD-Rom I assume? If so, when you choose the source from the setup menu, are you choosing ATAPI cdrom or what?
