Question how do I install RPM's?


Hi I am very new to Linux and I have installed centos sme7.4 I would like to know where to get the RPM's from and how to download them and install them?

On my centos I use yum - Yellowdog Updater Modified. This manages update and installs. The man page is good and should help

Hi first of all i wish you for joining the linuxquestions.org and welcome to linux world.
As you are new to linux so i wish you best of luck and hope you enjoy linux.

Well you can install RPM by two ways either by through RPM package or b through yum.
As you are you i suggest you to use rpm to install the new package. For installing new
package use the command
#rpm -ivh {package name}

You can download the package from Redhat or linux sites and the install it by using rpm command.

What is that sme7.4? The current release is 5.3 so I don't understand how you can have something 7+??

Definitely stick to using the yum tool which will automatically handle dependencies. The system should install already having cfg files pointing to the CENTOS repositories.
Don't mix RHEL and CENTOS repos, there's no point.
There is also a GUI tool if you have it installed.
