How do I install programs in Knoppix

I am still kind of new to linux. How do I install programs or software into my knoppix os? I am using Knoppix as my main os on my hard drive. Also is there a faster linux os than Knoppix? I have tried umbunto and fedora and I did't get much out of them.

You could check out the knoppix.net site. Particularly, the second paragraph in the link below:

Quote:
A HD installed Knoppix will give you a running GNU/Linux system but it is not easy to support or administrate and add/remove of software is complicated and is best left to GNU/Linux experts

Hey,

I've only ever used Knoppix for a recovery CD. As in, when my system breaks for some bizarre reason. Fast you say ? I found Arch Linux is slim and fast. It will depend on your system specs, however Arch with XFCE, is going to be much faster than Fedora and that horrible Gnome shell.

Maybe you should try Linux Mint if your new or if you want to try to install Arch, Linux questions is here to help. Wouldn't worry though, the documentation for Arch Linux is 1st class, it walks you through step by step.

Kind Regards

Edit: Oops yancek beat me to it !

Knoppix is debian based so try .deb files or maybe apt-get install.

Knoppix was the king of live cd's at one time. It may now be easily installed but there would be a good reason for you to consider another distro. One feature of a good distro is a way and a collection of apps that are easy to install. For example OpenSuse uses a one click means. There are other distro's with package or software management that work easily too.

Fast would be a specialized distro. Some are meant for older systems.

You can use apt-get from the command line or the Synaptic Package Manager under the preferences menu. The DVD version of KNOPPIX also includes Software Center, which is a little friendlier than Synaptic IMO.
