How do I install pppd on Mandrake 9.1?

I am a complete Linux virgin, but I recently got a laptop in addition to my Windows XP System. Since I had Mandrake, I thought "Why not set it up to dual boot?" (I use the windows GIMP a lot, and had heard the Linux version was immeasurably better.)
Anyway, I would quite like to surf the internet, but in order to connect I need PPPD. I've found out I didn't have it, and have downloaded the tar.gz file.
Then i came across my largest problem: I have absolutely no idea how to actually install a non-standard package on Linux? How do i do it? Ive read the help files that come with Mandrake and PPPD, but they might as well be written in chinese.

hi Universalpsyko, welcome to lq. more than likely some form of a dial up/ppp is on the install disks for your distro, look for kppp, wvdial, just a couple off of the top of my head. thay would be installed much easier via the mandrake package manager which works w/rpms. if however you are set on installing from source there is a guide here

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094

before using this guide to install from source, i'd reccomend looking at this.

http://checkinstall.izto.org/

hope something here helps.
good luck.

Thanks a lot. I'll try looking on the mandrake Disks again. I hadn't thought of that!
I think I'm going to like Linux. It doesn't try to tell me that I shouldn't look on the contents of my own hard drive for a start!
