How do I install Lisa Daemon (complete newbie)
 

Ok, first I suppose it is best to say I am a complete newbie to Linux or anything other than Microsoft Windows (be easy on me please). Heck, I had trouble just figuring out how to do an "image cd" for booting...

However, I now have Linux installed on an old pentium 3. The goal is to use it to host my website voiceforinmates.com

At any rate as I am playing around with this I get into KDE... and try to browse the net and get the Lisa Daemon is not installed...

What I need is someone willing to tell me like I am a 2 year old exactly what to type here...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose right now I am just looking to set this up so that I may crawl through this and figure out the ins and outs...

I am connecting through a T1 (which has just been installed) the T1 is connected to my Linksys router which is then plugged into a hub.. there I have 4 computers along with a NAS200... Now the server itself is plugged directly into the T1 box (netopia) and is supposed to have it's own static ip.

P.s. when I go to the root listed above and type
ping www.google.com it seems asthough it is pinging it...
receing a bunch of responses back
64 bytes from yo-in-f99.google.com (ip address): icmp_seq=1 ttl=246 time 59.9 ms

then it seems to list these in sequential order.

I've used KDE for years, never even heard of the Lisa Daemon until now.

A quick look in the package manager for my distro shows there is a package called lisa which is described as 'LAN information server for KDE' but I do not have it installed. I suggest looking to see if what ever package manager you have lists a package called lisa and if so, install it.

Information it would have been useful for you to provide:

What distro of Linux are you using and what version. Fedora? Kubuntu? openSUSE?

Version of KDE - there's both 3 and 4 in use these days.

What web browser you are you trying to use to 'browse the net'?

Exactly what did you do before you saw the error message about Lisa Daemon not being installed?

Arizonagroovejet first thank you for responding, ok I have managed to get online.... Now, what I am having difficulty with is having it show my network (the other computers...)

I am using slackware 12.1
KDE 3.5
the browser is firefox

Now, I have the localhost as VFI should it be Workgroups? Is localhost and workgroup name 1 in the same.

Undernetwork settings I chose slackware 10.0 as the (module) I believe that is what it was called. This enabled the ethernet network device and it does seem to show my static ip...

I'm afraid you've lost me. If you're totally new to Linux starting with Slackware doesn't seem like a good idea. I've never tried it by all accounts it is far from the easiest distro to get up and running with. I suggest Kubuntu, Fedora or openSUSE. Kubuntu will give you KDE 3.5 by default, not sure about Fedora and openSUSE, they may give you KDE 4 by default which is very different and not yet as mature as KDE 3.5.

Go to the kde control network settings and tell it to start the lisa daemon on start up. It will more than likely ask if you want start it right now, answer "yes".

Thanks for the assist... And yep you are right this thing was a pain in the *** to intall. However this KDE seems to be something that I can adjust to as a user interface...
