scandisk and defrag XP. reboot with suse 10.1 disc 1 in the drive. it will handle all the details as to resizing the xp partition, setting up the boot loader, etc.

Do I need to partition the hard drive myself before installing the disc?

It depends - if you want to be able to set how much space the windows partition has and then how much the linux, then yes - you will need to. However Suse has a very easy to use installation, it will recommend what it thinks is best and you can then say yes or no to it.
