How do I install FireFox3 in PCLinuxOS minime?

Can someone tell me how to install Firefox. I installed PCLinuxOS minime and it seems to have loaded perfectly on my Dell M65, video, sound, wireless, mouse, touch pad .... I got my wireless connection set up effortlessly and got on the internet with the stock browser but I normally use firefox and wanted to use that. down loaded firefox-3.0.tar.bz2 to my desktop and could not figure how to load it. I tried to use the instructions at firefox but all I got was bad command, no file ect. Bashed, whatever. I tried to use Synaptic but can't figure how to select it or install it. I'm an old DOS jocky and happy in Windows but am trying out Linux for grins and giggles on my old laptop for just internet/email on the road. I've searched here but all I get is geekinees and gibberish. There's got to be an easy way. In Windows I'd just click on it and it would unzip, instal and I'd be on my way.

In Synaptic the first thing to do is click reload to download a fresh list of installs, then in the search box type firefox3 when it appears click the sqaurebox and mark it for installation, then click apply. Wherever possible try and stick to Synaptic for your installs.

I've just done a check, you need to install firefox-3.0.6-1pclos2007 not firefox3 you'll get an error message if you try to.

OK, got that far now. I had some problems and wound up updating something like 440 files. I had a bunch of down load errors about miss matched file sizes but the files that seemed to have problems looked like they pertained to hard ware that I don't have. Now, system boots up to GUI then drops down to terminal sign on. Signed on but still is in terminal mode "root@localhost~]#" I don't know unix/linix. Like to have system restore about now.

Looks like your graphics settings have gotten mangled somehow. When you are logged in as root type: startx then hit enter. Let me know if you get a desktop. Please don't do anything else mistakes made whilst logged in as root can render your system un-useable.

came back with
xinit: connection reset by peer errno 104 unable to connect to x server
xinit: no such process errno 3 sever error

me thinks it's time for reinstall.

Sadly, a reinstall would be a lot quicker than trying to resolve this in a question--> answer--> action, situation. I just don't have the time to do a one-on-one right now. The time you spend waiting for me to reply you could be up and running again.

The only good advice I can give you right now is, directly after you do your reinstall, hit the reload button then click the mark all updates button and finally click the apply button. Get the updates out of the way then install firefox after.

Thank you, I had to reinstall everything and start anew. I almost quit a couple of times. If I did not have access to a highspeed connection I probably would have given up. had to download some 600 files in multible sessions where I thought Synaptic was hosed. But finally it worked. So much work for a Mainstream aplication. I hope the next one won't be so troubling.

Thanks again.

The reason for the large amount of updates is because Minime is a very stripped down version of PCLinuxOS. Unless you stick to the lighter/smaller applications you might as well install PCLinuxOS 2007.

I'm glad you've got it all up and going again. :)

Thanks again. I think I was in the "lost in a new city and I can't find a pub!" syndorme. I loaded up a couple other programs and it worked fine. I've tried PCLinuxOS 2007 a couple of years ago but still felt it was not quite prime time yet. I wanted a lighter and up dated version and sofar this looks good. It does seem to make the laptop run faster. I plan to use this just on the laptop for travel/surfing/internet/email. Everything else is in the desktop. Unfortunately, on more thought, I may eventually have to scrap this line also. I'm more of an outdoors man and couldn't give a rip about music and videos. If I can't get something like my Delorme Topo map and GPS software for linux then I'd still have to have a second Windows laptop for the truck for hunting/camping/exploring. I tried Wine once but it turned my PII into a Z80 and a drunken crash test dummy. Google Earth could work in big city Portland Starbucks but the closest thing to wireless outside places like Dayville, Oregon are smoke signals!

Thanks again.
