how do I install an SRPM

I use fedora core 2 and whenever I try to install a source RPM it finishes and returns to the command line, but nothing is ever actually installed. what else do I need to do to actually make the source RPM install, or is this a system problem.

you need to actually compile the contents, -ivh o -Uvh wont help. you need to eitehr use -ba or -ta to build it, never sure quite which parameters though, check the manpage for details.

when I did "rpmbuild --recompile", it said I was required to have the development packages for all these programs I had on my system, is that usual for installing a source rpm?

Probably -- when you compile from source the compiler needs header files and development libraries for all of the other software the software you're building depends on. In general, I install the devel package of any software I install, because you need it when you want to build any other software that depends on that particular package.
