How do I install a propriety device driver?
 

I am running Suse 2.13 installed on a dual boot partition along with Windows 7
I need to install a usb wireless adapter so that Linux will "switch on" the adapter on start-up. It worked well when I used linux on a "Live" disc but that was because the wireless adapter was being started by Windows.
The device is a Billion brand wireless-N USB Adapter.
The installation disk has a Linux driver on it but the installation program on the disk only works for Windows.
In the column named Devices on the left hand side of the desktop in Linux shows the device as Bipac 3011 N along with the hard drive , floppy drive and computer.
clicking on the Bipac 3011 N icon brings up in the main window, all the files on the cd.
Clicking on the Linux icon in this window then brings up a box icon named
rtl8192su_linux_24_2.6.0003.1019.2009.p1.tar.gz.
I need to know how to unpack this and where to unpack it to so that the wireless adapter will work.
I realize that this is probably waaaayy too much information but i didn't want to annoy anyone with not providing enough.
It took me a few years before I became comfortable with Windows, Linux might take a little longer.

Thanks for the reply. I've downloaded it and all I have to do is figure out what to do with it.
One of my main problems is I keep running into the "you don't own this file/folder" thing. I'll keep plugging away at it.

That sounds like a permissions issue. Why not take 10 minutes and learn about permissions and you'll never be bothered by it again. I promise. ;)

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I'm in way over my head with this Linux thing. I don't understand it at all and the more I try, The less I understand. I'm thinking one has to have a programing background to get anywhere. I'll exit gracefully and try to understand what's going before I try again, instead of wasting yours and others time.

Your quite welcome. Linux requires some effort (but so do Windows and Mac OS if you're not used to them). It is certainly not true that you "have to a programming background to get anywhere". As I said in my previous post, it you're willing to spend a few minutes learning most problems can be dealt with. The real skill is learning how to find the relevant information to solve your problem.
