How do I get Suse 9.3 to recognise a USB Dongle?
Probs:
a) System seems to have problems recognising a dongle. b) neither '-ppp' nor 'wvdial' recognise a USB dongle...and.. c) Suse 12.2 doesn't recognise it either. Yes, i know its probably a config thing... I would rather not run 12.2. Thanks |
The very old suse9 will not
the fact that opensuse 12.2 is not seeing it , is odd well maybe it is, but the driver is not installed And without knowing what this "dongle" is , i can not offer much but see if it is seen plug it in and run Code:
su - if so for more information like the chip in it and exactly what it is run Code:
su - |
A USB dongle is like any other hardware, if there's no driver for it or the right module is not loaded, it won't work. Since you say nothing about what USB dongle it actually is, it's hard to offer any advice.

Guys, thanks! The term "Newbie" is well named...I downloaded 12.2, but failed to realise that the 'T&Cs' for the T-Mobile E173 PAYG dongle restrict me to 1gb per month. The ISO comprised 1.8gb of the full install. Have now done full install and dongle is recognised, but not as a dongle.
Being new to Linux and only just having found/lost my feet, as it were, would appreciate pointers as to setting the thing up. I'm using KDE4, but, if Gnome has less overhead, will use that. Cheers |
this opensuse forum post might help
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...rk-11-3-a.html usb wireless is known to be , for the most part, a pain to get running also on the KDE4 desktop there is a "network" widget in the bottom toolbar "r-click" it and select " add widget " in the search box type" network" then add "Network manager" to the desktop or toolbar open it and put a check in the "Enabling network" unless opensuse is installed on a laptop ( and even sometimes then) networking is turned off by default in the user interface on the desktop there is a "pop out" tool bar the "adjustable wrench " icon is the configure tools from there you can configure the network |
