How do I get my RH boxes to see each other?

I have no clue on how to get my RH 7.1 boxes to see each other. I have a router/4 port switch. Both boxes are online, but I dont know if they can communicate, share files, etc. What utility do I use to see my ip info (BTW, ifconfig doesnt work on one of my boxes?) Is there a network neighborhood-like utility that would allow me to see my other box by its name. Any help, links (noob friendly, please,) etc. would be greatly appreciated...

OK, there are two main method of sharing files between boxes: NFS and SAMBA. If you're absolutelty certain that you'll never have a Windows box on your network, then go with NFS since this is standard beteen all (?) Unices and Unix-like OSs. If you want to have the files shared so that even Windows boxes can see them, then look into Samba. There should be plenty of threads around already that deals with both, so you should have enough to get started.
