How do I get icons to stay on desktop?

I am a hardware guy. I familiar with SunOS and Windows where
when I minimized an Xterm or any window it can be left as an icon
on the desktop for the duration of the access. In KDE when I minimize
a Konsol (one of say 10 or more) it drops down to the bottom
tray and is difficult to tell which is which.
How do I make the icons stay on top of the desktop?

I suggest that you make the icons easier to read by making the bottom panel larger. Also you could make the bottom panel a hidden panel so that it does not take up any screen space when not in use.

To configure your panel, start kcontrol (control center) and click on Desktops -> Panels

Just a thought. When I use KDE (or Flux) I like to put the virtual desktops to use. In KDE I would have ten desktops and I get rid of the taskbar, because then I get used to having the same app's always in the same desktop.
