I am confused. You say you want to format a recovery partition and then want to know what size? If you currently have a windows or OEM sort of recovery partition then it may be an odd partition type. You'd have to create a common one to easily use it.

If you mean you wish to create a partition that can be used to save off some data then you may be wasting your time. I'd suggest a new drive over a same disk partition but times is tough and it may be all you have to work with. The size if a backup partition would depend on the type of backup and the amount of data and even the type of data. How do you intend to use this partition.
