Hard drive formatting is usually part of the installation process.

Who can tell, since you don't give any useful details?? What version/distro of Linux are you using? Installing via what media? To what kind of hardware? New install or upgrade??

As catkin said, formatting is usually part of the install process. Sometimes, some distros will give you the choice of formatting if it finds data, so if you don't select it, it'll try to use what's there. Look carefully at the choices on the screen during disk-layout time.
