how do i find linux software to turn an old pc into a linux server?

i have an old pc and want to turn it into a linux web server. can someone tell me the steps needed to do this and the sites that i can find the needed software.

Basically any major distro will ship ready with apache,
that aside your question is rather vague.

sorry for vagueness. i've never used linux, but i understand it is free. i have an old pc with win 2000 server that has some issues. i like to tinker with web programming and i need a server. hearing that linux is free, i want to nuke my system and try linux. is linux an operating system like windows and apache like IIS?
