how do i... (dns Q)
just set up a new machine.
I named it: xxxxxx but on my other machines i cannot resolve xxxxxx my past experience is, if all the machines are windows, it's fine. but the new machine is linux.. so how do i resolve the hostname xxxxxx on my windows machines? settings: dhcp at the router. redhat 9.0 not sure if bind (named) is installed or running. |
well you will need to use dns.... presumably windows is resolving through wins (yuck). you will no be using any form of dns at present, that's the problem. you can either install a dns server or add a static entry in lmhosts. this isn't really a linux question though.

By default windows should be resolving netbios names using broadcasts. You can run Samba(smbd, nmbd), Windows boxes will then be able to see the Linux box.
And yeah adding static entries in lmhosts file will also work. |
thanks for the replies,
acid_kewpie, do i install the dns server on windows machines or the linux machines? Demonbane, i'll install Samba(smbd, nmbd) and give that a try, thx |
