Code:
ls -al /usr/bin/ja*
find out where java is pointing to. more than likly it is a symbolic link pointing somewhere.

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html. This should help with getting the plugin enabled for mozilla.

i typed the ls /usr/bin/ja* command it pointed to a file named gcjh in the same folder (/usr/bin/java,javac and jar).
As it is i can't run any of my .jar files cos the gcj doesn't recognize or am i doing something wrong?

since the java symbolic link is not pointing to the correct location thats why your installed jdk is not visible to which.
Go to /usr/bin
Do ln -sf <installed jdk's path> java
That should do it!
