How do I deal with ip tables

What I want to know is how to configure the thing to remember all the configurations from before a restart.

Also how do I know that ip tables is working- in a few of the tutorials that I saw it was mentioned to check if the service was enabled, however Ubuntu spat out that it was not recognized.Same goes for chkconfig and lsmod. Now I know that iptables is integrated into the kernel, and that might account for it not showing up,and it seems to be working ok when I try to input new rules but I am not exactly certain of what is going on.
