how do I create links to folders?

I'll bet this is an easily answered question, but I have been unable to find a way to create links to folders. Here is an example of what I would like to know how to do. student . charleshays . net / ~hillr / shortcut . jpg {I was unable to post this as a link due to the fact that I have under 5 posts. sorry for the inconvienience.}
It seems to act like a folder of it's own, in the way that if you are the terminal, and "cd" to the shortcut, you go to the folder it's linked to. furthermore, if you "cd .." you return back to the folder the shortcut you used is located on.

the reason being is that I have a gargantuan hard drive that I have all my mp3's, movies, and such located on. I would like to circumvent having to navigate to the /mnt/ all the time. Short of mounting the harddrive in my home directory, this is the only solution I can see.

I am using gnome2, in fedora core 3.

thanks for the time.

Use ln command. Read man page of ln.

Example
Soft link
ln -s file1 file2

For hard link do not use -s switch.
