How do I close my X server?

A quick question on how to close my X server.
I'm trying to install the latest NVIDIA driver, but this error came up :

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing.

How and what is this X server?
I need urgent help, thanks

To get out, open a terminal and type:
telinit 3
Do the nvidia stuff.
When you're finished running the nividia installer and finished editing XF86Config, type:
startx

the X server is what runs your graphics (GUI)
