How do I change window manager?

  • How do I stop GNOME/metacity and start another window manager?
--is sudo init 3 the normal way to do this?
  • How do I load another window manager at login/pre-login/wherever in the boot process GNOME/metacity starts?
  • Is there a didactic guide to window managers, graphical environments, and switching between them (for newbies) or some very clear examples somewhere?

which distribution?
In general you can install a window manager using your packet manager.
If you use gnome and gdm, it will be added at the gdm menu.

Fedora 11.

I can install them.

What is the gdm menu? What do I do once I am no longer in/using GNOME?

Gdm is the login manager from gnome, where you put the login and pass
There is an option to choose the window manager
at least at my debian box

I see ... but it loads GNOME whatever window manager I choose. Is it using that window manager with GNOME? The idea is to not start GNOME at all.

Okay, I was doing something wrong; it does take me to a different wm.

So I have some more questions and you will see why I want a complete newbie guide:
  • openbox takes me to a completely blank grey screen — presumably I need to set something up before entering it so I can at least have a terminal or a command prompt within it to lauch applications. Where/how do I do that? How do I get out of that screen when there is nothing for me to select or do?
  • Sugar similarly — where do I set up the environment? (I'm just trying wms there were packages for; I think I'm really going to want to use fluxbox or enlightenment)
  • once I get to gdm, I'm already in GNOME, aren't I, so where would I be if I didn't have GNOME installed at all? What loads GNOME? How do I use something else?
  • Where do you recommend I go to learn more about this stuff (somewhere starting in baby-speak)?

A good start would be

If you don't use gdm or kdm, you can use startx to start the window manager.
