How do I change my monitor via cli?

I've been struggling trying to get 1280x1024 mode working in FC3. Just for the hell of it I tried selecting "Generic 1280x1024 CRT" or something like that to see what would happen. Well after restarting X.org to make the settings take effect I got a "signal out of range" message when the X session tries to boot up. I need to know how I can either make it start working at 1280x1024@ 66hz or get back to my original (and correct) Viewsonic A70 setting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or wherever Fedora keeps it)
xorgcfg
xorgconfig

I always make a backup of the file before I go tweaking. As far as getting the rez you want, if you've got the correct refresh rates and card/driver you should be okay. That said, my display looks good at 1024x768 and then looks goofy as hell and would require significant modelining until I get to 1600x1200 and then it looks good again. *shrug* So if you're not invested in precisely 1280x1024 and you could go higher, you might try that.

(Oh, and actually, Fedora may have some specific tool that even works in text mode, but the above are the generic ones.)

You can also manually edit your xorg.conf file (in the /etc/X11 directory) Most likely your horizontal and vertical refresh rates are not optimal; according to the Viewsonic website, for an A70 the correct settings are f h: 30~70kHz; f v: 50~180Hz

There are numerous posts here at LQ regarding configuring video settings, which I'd suggest reviewing. Good luck with it -- J.W.
