how do i change my graphical card?
Hi all,
i've just bought a new graphical card, switching from a NVIDIA geforce 2 GTS pro to an ATI power color RADEON 9800 platinium edition. On windows, that change is very easily done, but on linux(debian) gnome wont launch,so for me (a beginner) i can't go to the internet to search for the new driver...that's why i'm still using my nvidia card. so my question how do i change ma graphical card? Do i need to download the drivers and install it before OR after the card change?do i need to uninstall the old nvidia driver?is it much more complicated than that? i'll be pleased if anybody could help me thanks |
you don't need to remove any modules, just edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (or xorg.conf) and change "nvidia" to "radeon" in the device section. then do the physical swap. that should be it.

hi,it's me again
i've try what you've tell me to do but it ain't work,it's the same as before, when i start my computer it says " cannot start the X server" and also that the X server is not set up correctly and when i look for the X server output, i can read that there is a fatal server error "no screens found" so,what must i do?how can i reconfigure my X server? also in /var/log/XFree86.0.log the words " nvidia corporation" shows up very often, any idea? |
the "no screens found" message is just the very end result of something earlier faliing. looking back earlier for other lines starting (EE) and post them...
|
try runing /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and then proced with the configuration tool
|
or xorgconfig if your using xorg
