That's what I've done. Using Debian, the directory is /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/. If you tar xvzf the .tar.gz file, all that's in it is libflashplayer.so and you copy that into the mozilla plugin directory. I also deleted the original plugin, which was called flash-mozilla.so or something like that. I don't like not having Flash, because a lot of sites use it and the open source alternatives don't always work. That's the way I just did it for Slackware, also. Works perfectly.
