How do I auto start "stuff"?

I have programs that I wont them to auto start [AWN Manger, Firestarter] and maybe something else I don't remember now. How do I do this?

Thanks.

This HOW-TO belongs to Gentoo people, but it's not Gentoo-specific. Depending on you window manager/DE it's accomplished differently.
