Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I just installed mandrake 9.2. How do I add icons to the desktop ?
I installed netscape and I can run it from terminal /usr/local/netscape/netscape, but I want to create a shortcut on my desktop, that will run it without the terminal window open...
depends on what window/desktop manager you are using, I think only KDE and Gnome allow you to have icons on the desktop, these are desktop managers. Window managers like enlightenment and WM dont have desktops per se, just a workspace and you add stuff to their menus instead.
Yeah, I have exactly the same problem. If I try to link it to the desktop in KDE, then click on the icon, nothing happens, no program loads. The same is for the KDE start menu. I expect if the GNOME configuration to be similar to KDE though.

And if its still not working you can pick the "run in terminal" check box and see if that makes it work, you'll get a terminal window, but it might satisfy you somewhat more that opening a terminal and typing it yourself...
