how do I add icons to the desktop

Hi,
I just installed mandrake 9.2. How do I add icons to the desktop ?
I installed netscape and I can run it from terminal /usr/local/netscape/netscape, but I want to create a shortcut on my desktop, that will run it without the terminal window open...

How can I do that ?

Thanks

depends on what window/desktop manager you are using, I think only KDE and Gnome allow you to have icons on the desktop, these are desktop managers. Window managers like enlightenment and WM dont have desktops per se, just a workspace and you add stuff to their menus instead.

It depends on what you are running. Do you use Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox, WindowMaker?

Oops. fatgod beat me to it

Yeah, I have exactly the same problem. If I try to link it to the desktop in KDE, then click on the icon, nothing happens, no program loads. The same is for the KDE start menu. I expect if the GNOME configuration to be similar to KDE though.

Well in KDE you would right click/create new/link to application. Fill in the blank for the name of the app, click on execute, use the browse button to locate the bin you wish to link to, and choose ok. You can click the gear image in the General tab to browse for a suitable icon.

And if its still not working you can pick the "run in terminal" check box and see if that makes it work, you'll get a terminal window, but it might satisfy you somewhat more that opening a terminal and typing it yourself...

For Gnome it is: right click, New Launcher
then browse to /usr/local/netscape/netscape
OK.

Talking Netscape Icon

Can anyone give me the exact path for the Netscape execution file so I can create a shortcut on my desktop or taskbar
in Mandrake. I installed it with root permission in commnad shell and it defaulted to
/usr/local/netscape
Thanks in advance
